Lionel Messi has rewritten football history again — this time by becoming the player with the most assists ever recorded in the sport.
The Argentine’s 405th assist came in Inter Miami’s 5–1 win over New York City FC in the MLS Cup semifinal on Sunday, where he set up Mateo Silvetti in the 67th minute to help seal the Eastern Conference title.
Inter Miami will now face Western Conference champions Vancouver in the MLS Cup final on December 6.
Before Sunday, Messi was tied with Hungarian icon Ferenc Puskás on 404 career assists. His latest contribution places him outright first on the all-time list.
