No controversy, ADC dismisses claims of irregularity in Atiku’s registration

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has debunked reports questioning the validity of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s registration as a party member in Adamawa State.

In a statement on Tuesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi dismissed reports suggesting Atiku was not properly registered with constitutionally recognised ward executives in Jada 1 Ward.

Atiku formally joined ADC on Monday, marking a significant development ahead of the 2027 elections. But confusion arose after Christopher Okechukwu, identified as Director of Media and Public Affairs, claimed the registration was invalid because it was conducted by individuals not recognised by the party’s national headquarters.

“This registration was conducted through individuals who are not recognised by the ADC’s National Headquarters,” Okechukwu had said, arguing that Atiku was yet to complete valid membership procedures.

But Abdullahi countered that the individual behind the statement “does not exist within the party’s records, structures or leadership organs.”

He warned that circulating unauthorised statements can mislead the public and undermine confidence in institutions backed by the ADC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The national leadership of the ADC is not in any doubt, and no one authorised to speak for the party has said anything close to what was reported,” Abdullahi said.
He cautioned that attempts to weaken opposition parties pose a threat to Nigeria’s multiparty democracy and urged the media not to encourage narratives capable of pushing the country toward a one-party structure.
