The Super Eagles of Nigeria strengthened their bid for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, defeating Gabon 4-1 in a thrilling playoff at the Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco.

After a goalless first half, Akor Adams broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, capitalising on a defensive error to put Nigeria ahead. Gabon fought back and equalised late through Mario Lemina, sending the match into extra time.

In the added period, Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead in the 98th minute before Victor Osimhen sealed an emphatic victory with two clinical strikes in the 102nd and 110th minutes. Despite a consolation goal from Gabon, the Super Eagles’ dominance was never in doubt.

Nigeria’s defensive unit, marshalled by Benjamin Frederick and Calvin Bassey, kept the Panthers at bay, ensuring Gabon’s efforts came to nothing. The Eagles’ performance combined tactical discipline, stamina, and sharp finishing, earning praise from fans and analysts alike.

The win puts Nigeria in a commanding position in the playoff and brings them tantalisingly close to qualifying for the World Cup to be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
