Tiwa Savage: I didn’t like being African while growing up

    Published on

Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has opened up about her early struggles with identity while growing up in London, revealing she once felt embarrassed being African.
Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Tiwa reflected on how the global rise of Afrobeats has transformed perceptions of African culture.

“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world. We created it with nothing — no support, no infrastructure, no real belief, even from our own people,” she said.
“I remember growing up in London and not being happy being African. But now, I’m proud because Afrobeats is filling stadiums and topping charts. People once said it’d fade after 15 minutes of fame, but we’re still here — unstoppable.”

She added, “One in every four Black persons is African. They can try to quiet us down, but the music isn’t going anywhere. We are Africans, and we are unstoppable.”
