NSC applauds Green Falcons’ grit at Women’s Rugby League World Series

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has hailed Nigeria’s Green Falcons for their courageous performance at the IRL Women’s Rugby League World Series 2025 in Brampton, Canada, describing their run as “a triumph of spirit, pride, and perseverance.”

After a dominant 10–0 win over Ireland to reach the final, the Falcons fell 62–4 to world number 16, Fiji, in a spirited contest at Terry Fox Stadium. Despite the defeat, Nigeria earned global admiration for being the only team to score against the eventual champions.

Success Iyoha’s try and the team’s unyielding defense showcased the Falcons’ fighting spirit. Even after captain Blessing Aladeyelu’s injury midway through the game, the team battled valiantly to the end.

Fiji coach Tony Herman commended Nigeria as “a really good footy side that made us work for every point,” while Canadian journalist Bolarinwa Olajide praised the team for “scoring the only try Fiji conceded — a massive achievement.”

Chairman of the Nigeria Rugby League Association, Abiodun Olawale-Cole, said the next phase would focus on improving the players’ international exposure and fitness levels.

“To our players, coaches, and staff — your courage and commitment have raised the bar for women’s rugby in Nigeria,” he said. “This is not just a moment — it’s the start of a movement.”
