FIFA, CAF funds are project-based, audited, not gifts, NFF clarifies

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it receives millions of dollars in free cash from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), insisting that such funds are strictly tied to specific projects and thoroughly audited.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Federation described the reports as misleading and mischievous, explaining that every fund received from the global and continental football bodies is allocated to pre-approved programmes and not as discretionary handouts.

“All monies from FIFA or CAF are tied to particular purposes. Both bodies send auditors every year to verify how the funds are managed and to ensure compliance with international financial standards,” NFF said.

The Federation explained that development funds are tied to concrete projects and programs, while the FIFA Forward initiative operates under strict regulations involving financial compliance, monitoring, and auditing at every stage.

It cited the ongoing NFF/FIFA Players’ Hostel and new training pitches at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, as examples of such supervised projects.

“Every stage of the work is verified, assessed, and sanctioned before further disbursements are made directly to FIFA-approved consultants,” the statement added.

The NFF also took aim at what it called “social media mischief-makers” peddling exaggerated figures about its finances.

“Anyone who understands what it takes to organize a single national team match would think twice before making such baseless claims,” the body said.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, the Federation stressed that it operates under prudent financial protocols consistent with global best practices. It added that its accounts are annually audited by the reputable firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and presented publicly during its Annual General Assembly.
