I won’t repeat my predecessors’ past mistakes, says Okpebholo

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vowed that his administration will not repeat the costly mistakes of its predecessor.

Speaking while hosting the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch, and members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the forthcoming NBA National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, Okpebholo described the failure of the previous administration to swear in three judges — duly cleared by the National Judicial Council (NJC) — as “a slap on the face of the judiciary” and “a grave injustice to Edo State’s justice system.”

“We are in government to make a real difference — a visible difference that Edo people can feel,” the Governor said. “The decision to deny those judges their swearing-in, despite NJC clearance, was indefensible. It was a disservice to justice, and my administration will not tolerate such.”

He disclosed that he had personally investigated the matter before taking office and found no reason for the delay. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” he declared. “Swearing them in was my way of correcting a wrong and restoring confidence in our judiciary.”

Okpebholo reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law and deepening judicial independence, adding that operational vehicles would be provided for the NBA to aid its statewide engagements.

NBA Benin Branch Chairman, Barr. Idemudia Iredia Osifo, praised the Governor’s bold leadership, particularly his prompt swearing-in of the judges and the restoration of the Customary Court of Appeal.

“Your Excellency, your courage in reversing injustice has restored hope in our judiciary,” Osifo said. He also announced that the NBA would host a Land Administration Seminar on November 5, 2025, to examine the Land Use Act and make policy recommendations to the state government.

Present at the meeting were Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa and other top officials.
