FIFA U-17 WWC: Flamingos battle-ready for France

    Published on

After a stinging 4–1 defeat to Canada in their opening Group D fixture, Nigeria’s U-17 girls, the Flamingos, face a do-or-die clash against a confident French side that began their campaign with a 4–2 victory over Samoa.

This match carries weight and history. The last time Nigeria met France at the U-17 Women’s World Cup was in 2012 in Azerbaijan, a tense goalless draw that ended 5–3 in France’s favour on penalties.

Now, thirteen years later, the Flamingos are out for redemption. Bottom of the table with zero points and a -3 goal difference, Nigeria must at least secure a draw to stay alive, but a win would transform their campaign heading into the final group match against Samoa.

France are fast, technical, and ruthless and their four goals against Samoa proved that. Nigeria, despite flashes of promise against Canada, were undone by defensive errors.

Coach Bankole Olowookere’s girls must tighten transitions, stay compact, and play with hunger. This game is as much about grit as it is about tactics.

When they file out at the Football Academy Mohammed VI (Pitch 1), Rabat, at 8 p.m., it will be more than just France versus Nigeria, it will be a battle for pride, belief, and survival.
