My name’ll be on LP ballot in 2027 — Peter Obi

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his membership of the party and declared that his name will appear on the ballot in the 2027 general elections.

Obi also confirmed his alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a coalition aimed at defeating the ruling APC in 2027.

Speaking to journalists after visiting a school on the outskirts of Abuja, Obi said, “I am a confirmed member of the Labour Party, and for emphasis, my name will be on the ballot during the 2027 general election.”

Reacting to the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the APC, Obi said, “Peter Mbah is a good friend of mine. I believe he took his decision based on his political calculations. As for the alleged plot to capture the South-East, we are not in a military era where you ‘capture’ people. Leadership is about doing the right things so people follow willingly.”

On Omoyele Sowore’s agitation for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, Obi reiterated his long-standing position: “There was no need for his arrest in the first place. I have always said I will consult, negotiate, and dialogue with anybody who is agitating. It’s the right approach.”

He continued: “This should not apply only to Nnamdi Kanu but to all agitators across the country. Let’s follow the rules of law and engage them constructively. Dialogue is for everyone’s good.”

When asked about the nomination of Prof. Amupitan as INEC Chairman, Obi said: “When he is confirmed, I’ll congratulate him and remind him that one day he will leave that post. He should ensure he keeps his reputation intact.”
