‘Bayelsa’s Broom TakeOver,’ Gov, 19 Lawmakers Dump PDP, Head For APC

The governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has resigned his membership from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

All 19 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly elected on the platform of the PDP, alongside the Speaker, Abraham Ingobere, as well as members of the state executive council, also resigned membership of the party.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, announced this via a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

“Gov. Douye Diri resigns from PDP alongside 19 members of the House of Assembly,” Alabrah wrote.

Diri also announced his resignation from the PDP at the State Executive Council Meeting held at the Government House in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, on Wednesday.

Following the development, residents are expecting the governor and his followers to move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Diri’s defection followed that of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who dumped the PDP for the ruling APC on Tuesday, October 14.

Mbah shortly after his defection said he decided to leave the PDP for the APC because the PDP did not recognise the voice of his people.

The governor dismissed claims that his action amounted to a betrayal of the PDP, under which he was elected.

“This is not a betrayal; it is also not abandonment. It is more about understanding that I was entrusted with the people’s mandate by the people, and it is also a responsibility on me to carry that same mandate on a platform that will best serve the people,” he said.
