Fubara joins 24 APC govs to welcome Tinubu in Imo

Owerri, the Imo State capital, is in a festive mood as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrives to commission major infrastructure projects executed by the administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma.

The visit has drawn an unusual political crowd, with all 24 All Progressives Congress (APC) governors converging on the state for what is being described as a mini-APC convention.

In a surprising development, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is also expected to attend the event, marking a notable show of political presence beyond party lines.

Security chiefs, traditional rulers and delegates from all 36 states have been mobilised for the occasion. Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and local government chairmen are also in attendance.

In preparation for the presidential visit, the state government carried out an extensive cleanup across Owerri. Streets were cleared, grasses trimmed, and key venues refurbished to accommodate guests and dignitaries.

Traffic around newly completed sites has been cordoned off, especially at the popular “Control” area, where a long-awaited flyover project is set to be commissioned.

Residents have expressed excitement over the long-delayed infrastructure finally coming to fruition. Faith Osuji, who trades near Bank Road, said residents endured hardship during construction but are relieved the project is now complete.

“We suffered because of this project for so long. We’re happy the government has finally completed it,” she said, urging authorities to ensure the bridge isn’t converted into a hideout by criminals.

A commercial driver identified as Chidi praised Uzodinma’s administration for improving infrastructure but noted that insecurity remains a major concern outside the state capital.

“Owerri is now more peaceful, but the rural areas are still unsafe. We still find it difficult to travel to our villages, especially on market days,” he said, urging greater collaboration with the Federal Government.

“The Governor has done a lot to make Imo comfortable. No one in his right senses will work against his own people,” he said.

With the influx of political heavyweights and the commissioning of long-awaited projects, today’s events in Owerri are being seen as both a test of Uzodinma’s leadership and a major show of strength for the APC ahead of future political contests.
