Labour Party senator defects to APC

    Published on

Senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District, Kelvin Chukwu, has dumped the Labour Party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Chukwu announced his decision to leave the party during a town hall meeting in Amuri Community, Nkanu West Local Government Area, citing the prolonged crisis and factionalisation within the party.

According to him, the internal wrangling had made it difficult for members to function effectively.

Chukwu also appreciated his constituents’ support since his election and assured them of continued service.

He stressed, “The protracted crisis rocking the LP, which has led to its fractionalisation, a development that is seriously affecting its members.”

Meanwhile, the former state chairman of the APC, Ben Nwoye, commended the Senator’s defection, describing it as a wise political decision that would benefit the lawmaker and his constituents.

Chukwu’s political move adds to a growing list of Labour Party members who have defected in recent months.

Other lawmakers from Enugu state, including Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu and Sunday Umehia, had joined the APC earlier, citing the leadership tussles and crisis in the Labour Party.

The wave of defections highlights the deepening challenges facing the Labour Party in Enugu State, with questions mounting over its leadership and political future.
