Champions League: Osimhen ruled out as Galatasaray take on Frankfurt

    Published on

Galatasaray will be without star striker Victor Osimhen when they face Eintracht Frankfurt in Thursday night’s UEFA Champions League clash.

The 26-year-old Nigerian suffered a bruised shin in the Super Eagles’ 1-0 World Cup qualifier win over Rwanda in Uyo. He returned to Turkey immediately afterward, missing the 1-1 draw against South Africa and sitting out team training on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Club officials confirmed that Osimhen did not travel to Germany after failing to recover in time.

“Osimhen’s hurt. We had hoped to get him back for this match, but the feedback from training wasn’t enough for him to play,” Galatasaray’s coach explained on the club’s official website. “The health of our players is most important. He’s not in the squad, but we trust our other attacking options.”

His absence leaves Galatasaray with a major headache in attack. Their fallback option, Mauro Icardi, is still not fully fit after suffering an ACL injury last November. The Argentine has yet to complete a full 90 minutes since returning from surgery, raising questions about his readiness to lead the line.

Coach Okan Buruk may also turn to Baris Yilmaz off the bench, though the Turkish winger is not a natural centre-forward.

With Osimhen sidelined and Icardi short of peak condition, the Turkish champions face a difficult challenge against Frankfurt, who will look to exploit their weakened attack.
