The stage is set for the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, which will commence on Monday, September 6, 2025, in Uyo, the state capital.

In preparation for the event, the two groups of the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival Planning Committee (AKSSFPC) successfully concluded a statewide torch-light tour covering all 31 Local Government Areas. The tour culminated on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Uyo Local Government Area, where Executive Chairman Dr. Uwemedimo Udo received the festival torch and pledged that his council’s athletes were fully prepared to compete and emerge victorious.

The two-day tour had earlier kicked off on Monday, September 1, at Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, where Chairman Hon. Anthony Nyong welcomed the torch on behalf of his people, assuring that their athletes were ready for the games.

Leader of Team-One from the Ministry of Sports, Mrs. Iniobong Udo, disclosed that the festival will feature 18 individual events, including athletics, badminton, karate, boxing, swimming, tennis, scrabble, chess, darts, judo, wrestling, squash, kickboxing, para-athletics, kung fu, weightlifting, table tennis, and taekwondo. Team sports will include football, handball, volleyball, basketball, and beach volleyball.

At the conclusion of the torch-light tour in Uyo, Dr. Udo expressed confidence that his council’s athletes would not only participate but also dominate the festival.

Other local councils that participated in the awareness campaign included Okobo, Mbo, Udung Uko, Oron, Urue Ofong, Abak, Ikot Ekpene, Ikono, Itu, Etim Ekpo, Oruk Anam, Ukanafun, and Ika.

Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, assured that adequate arrangements had been made for the smooth running of the event. He also called on Akwa Ibom residents to turn out en masse at the Uyo Township Stadium for the opening ceremony, which he said would be colorful and memorable.

The opening ceremony, to be held on Monday, September 6, will be officially declared open by Governor Pastor Umo Eno. The festival will run until Saturday, September 13, 2025.
