The battle for supremacy at the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba is intensifying, with Team Lagos and Team Edo leading the chase at the top of the medals table.

Team Lagos started strong, sweeping seven gold medals in swimming and making impressive showings in other sports.

One of the stars of the Games is 14-year-old gymnastics prodigy Stephanie Ogechukwu Onusiriuka, who won three gold, one silver, and a team silver, while also being crowned Best All-Round Gymnast in Nigeria.

Team Edo stamped their dominance in weightlifting, bagging six gold, one silver, and two bronze medals across the women’s 44kg, 48kg, and men’s 56kg categories.

In the men’s 56kg, Team Akwa Ibom claimed two golds and one bronze, while Team Niger picked up one gold and two silvers. Elsewhere, Team Oyo and Team Delta secured three medals each in the women’s 48kg behind Edo’s gold, while FCT swept all three silvers in the women’s 44kg, leaving Delta and Ogun to share the bronzes.

With several events still to come, the medals race in Asaba remains wide open as young athletes continue to dazzle with grit and brilliance.
