On Day four of the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, Mr. Olajide Bolaji, Technical Director of the Nigeria Golf Federation, expressed strong optimism about the country’s golfing future.

“We have great potentials with our youths in the game of golf,” he said while speaking at the Ibori Golf Country Club, the venue for golf at the Games.

Mr. Bolaji highlighted that golf is not only a prestigious sport but also a lucrative, medal-yielding discipline, with 24 medals at stake in this year’s edition.

The tournament has attracted players from over 22 states, unveiling promising young golfers. Notably, one participant recently flew Nigeria’s flag at the World School Championship in Morocco, underscoring the nation’s growing international presence in golf.

He commended Delta State’s hosting efforts, praising the standard of the golf course, but also urged for continuous improvements.

Mr. Bolaji stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, corporate organizations, and the private sector to properly develop the sport nationwide.

“It’s a game of like-minded people; you tend to meet people of affluence, influence, and more,” he added, describing the networking power of golf.

He finally appealed for greater government support, acknowledging ongoing efforts but urging for more investment.

“The Government is trying, but they can do better. As a body, we want to compete with other golfers worldwide and groom our children properly. Hence, we need proper support—financially and otherwise.”
