Crisis brews in ADC as ex-deputy chairman challenges leadership change

Fresh cracks are emerging in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the party’s former Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, has declared himself the acting National Chairman, following the resignation of the party’s founder and long-serving leader, Ralph Okey Nwosu.

Speaking to journalists in Bauchi, Bala argued that Nwosu’s decision to hand over the party’s leadership to what he described as “newcomers” violates the ADC constitution. He insisted that since he has not resigned as Deputy National Chairman, he automatically assumes the role of acting National Chairman.

“The constitution of our great party is clear. As Deputy National Chairman, I am the rightful acting National Chairman. My leadership is legitimate and backed by the constitution,” Bala said.

When asked if he was being sponsored to destabilize the ADC coalition that is positioning to challenge the ruling APC, Bala denied the allegation. Instead, he accused his opponents of flouting the constitution.

He also dismissed reports of his alleged expulsion from the party at ward level, describing them as “malicious fabrications” aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

“I remain firmly in charge of the ADC leadership,” he maintained.

Bala’s declaration has deepened tensions in the party, raising fears of another protracted leadership tussle that could fracture the ADC ahead of 2027.
