The National Assembly has declared that Nigeria’s democracy has finally come of age, with over two decades of uninterrupted civilian rule strengthening the legislature into a more professional and responsive institution.

Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Barr. Kamoru Ogunlana, made this known in Abuja on Monday at the induction ceremony of 785 newly recruited staff across Grade Levels 8 to 12.

Speaking through the Deputy Clerk, Engr. Bashir Yero Ogunlana, said the absence of military intervention in the last 26 years has created a solid platform for the growth of democratic institutions in Nigeria.

“Our democracy has continued to stabilise, with no threat of military intervention. The National Assembly has grown stronger, more professional, and more responsive to the needs of Nigerians,” he said.

He described the timing of the recruitment as strategic, noting that the new staff were joining at “a most auspicious period” when the institution requires commitment, discipline, and innovation to meet the demands of modern legislative practice.

Ogunlana told the recruits that working in the National Assembly was “a calling, not just a job,” stressing that success would depend on their ability to master legislative processes, uphold high moral standards, and constantly update their knowledge.

“Be conversant with your civic duties, rights, and privileges as public servants. Acquire digital skills to keep pace with modern demands of legislative work and, above all, remain loyal and diligent in the service of our country through this great institution,” he charged.

On welfare, he assured them of management’s commitment, revealing that their first 28 days allowance had already been paid in addition to prompt salary payments.

“By serving here, you are directly contributing to the strengthening of governance and the consolidation of Nigeria’s democratic journey. The National Assembly remains the living symbol of our democracy,” he added.

The CNA recalled that as part of wider reforms to reposition the legislature for better service delivery, management recently reassured over 3,000 legislative aides of lawmakers of job security and improved remuneration.

The induction is seen as part of ongoing efforts to professionalise the National Assembly’s workforce and consolidate democratic governance in Nigeria.
