Obi’s presidential dream dead on arrival, says Adeyanju

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has stated that it is already too late for Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to ever become Nigeria’s president.

According to Adeyanju’s remark in a post on X, he also argued that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar stands a stronger chance of clinching the presidency than Obi. Adeyanju maintained that even if Obi’s supporters—popularly known as the “Obidients”—adopt a new strategy and tone down what he described as political extremism and online insults, the former Anambra State governor still has no realistic path to the presidency.

He wrote: “Even if Obidients change strategy and become born again, stop political extremism and insulting people online, their candidate cannot be president of Nigeria. It’s too late already. Even Atiku has a better chance at the presidency than Obi. That’s how bad his chances are.”

In a separate development, Peter Obi has criticised the federal government’s plan to construct bus terminals in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones at an estimated cost of N142 billion.

Obi described the project as a misplaced priority, arguing that scarce public funds should be directed to areas that provide tangible benefits to citizens. He noted that spending choices such as this could determine the government’s success or failure.

The Federal Executive Council recently approved the construction of the terminals. Obi condemned the decision as a “tragic irony,” pointing out that many Nigerians live in poverty while vital infrastructure across the country remains in disrepair.
