Diamond League: Ofili sprints into final, Amusan fifth in 100m hurdles

Nigeria’s rising sprint star Favour Ofili has officially booked her place in the 2025 Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich, following a clutch performance in the final qualifying meet in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Needing a top-two or top-three finish to secure her spot—and aided by the absence of key rivals Rhasidat Adeleke and Jenna Prandini—Ofili delivered when it mattered most.

The 22-year-old, who was a finalist in the 200m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, clocked 22.31 seconds to finish second behind Olympic bronze medalist Brittany Brown, who won in 22.23 seconds.

Ofili’s runner-up finish earned her seven points, bringing her total to 13 points—enough to clinch a coveted spot in the Zurich final next weekend.

Barring any last-minute withdrawals, she will now face a stacked field that includes Brown, Dina Asher-Smith, Shericka Jackson, Amy Hunt, Anavia Battle, and McKenzie Long.

Her qualification marks a major milestone, as she becomes the second Nigerian to reach the Diamond League Final this season, joining Tobi Amusan, who secured her spot last week in Silesia.

While Ofili will be competing for the Diamond Trophy and a $30,000 top prize in the women’s 200m, Amusan, who finished  fifth in the 100m hurdles in pouring rain, will be chasing her fourth Diamond League title in the 100m hurdles—one of the designated Diamond+ Disciplines, which offers an elevated $50,000 prize purse.

Under the 2025 Diamond League format, each meet designates four Diamond+ events with higher prize money, and the Zurich final will feature eight such disciplines.

Ofili now has the chance to become only the second Nigerian ever to win a Diamond League trophy, while Amusan eyes another chapter in her storied career.
