Hamas signals acceptance of new Gaza ceasefire proposal

    Published on

Hamas on Monday told mediators it has agreed to the latest Gaza ceasefire proposal, according to international and Israeli media reports citing Hamas officials.

The officials offered no further details, but Israeli outlets reported that the plan was presented to Hamas a day earlier. It was said to be a revised version of the group’s earlier response and outlined a framework for a 60-day ceasefire along with a two-step release of hostages held in Gaza.

Talks were brokered by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, who have been at the centre of efforts to secure a truce between Israel and Hamas.

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, reacted to the reports by suggesting Hamas had only signaled approval because of growing military pressure. Speaking to senior IDF officers on Monday, Katz said Hamas was open to negotiations “only because of its fear that we seriously intend to conquer Gaza City.”

He added that taking control of Gaza City would mark a decisive step toward defeating the group. “The leadership is there, and there remain the central infrastructures of the military wing. Hamas also knows that this is now the core of its rule,” Katz said, according to Israeli media.

Israel has recently announced plans to capture Gaza City in full after earlier ceasefire talks stalled, sparking international concern about the humanitarian impact. Aid agencies warn the territory is sliding deeper into famine.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed doubt on the ceasefire efforts. In a social media post on Monday, he argued that hostages would only be released if Hamas was defeated militarily.

“We will only see the return of the remaining hostages when Hamas is confronted and destroyed. The sooner this takes place, the better the chances of success will be,” Trump wrote.
