The candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Folajimi Oyekunle, has emerged the winner of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election in Oyo State. Oyekunle beat his closest rival, Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to secure a position in the House of Representatives.
On Sunday, the Independent National Electoral Commission declared that Oyekunle swept to victory in the bye-election, which was held in Oyo State on Saturday.
The announcement was made at the Ibadan North Collation Centre in Ikolaba High School by the INEC Returning Officer, Abiodun Oluwadare.
Oyekunle polled a total of 18,404 votes to defeat his closest rival, Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress, who garnered 8,312 votes.
According to the electoral body, Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) recorded 88 votes, while Olabisi Olajumoke of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) polled 40 votes.
“The candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Hammed Badmus, had 18 votes,” Oluwadare said.
“Oyekunle of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner of the election.”
Following the declaration, a series of congratulatory messages have been pouring in from party members and supporters of the PDP across the state and beyond to the winner.
The Ibadan North seat became vacant after Olaide Akinremi, a member of the APC, died on July 10.
The deceased was a ranking member and House Committee Chairman on Science and Research.
