President Bola Tinubu on Monday extended his generous reward scheme, first seen with the Super Falcons of Nigeria, to the triumphant women’s basketball team, D’Tigress.

Each player received $100,000, a three-bedroom flat at the Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja, and a national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), in recognition of their victory over Mali in the final of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship held in Côte d’Ivoire.

The President also honoured members of the technical crew, who received $50,000 each, a three-bedroom apartment in the same estate, and national honours.

Like their football counterparts, the victorious D’Tigress team, who landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Monday, embarked on a celebratory parade through the streets of the capital before proceeding to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa for a formal reception.

The announcement of the presidential reward was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the team’s reception at the State House Banquet Hall.

The team and their officials were warmly received by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, accompanied by Wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa at exactly 5:05 pm.

Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima applauded the D’Tigress for bringing pride to the nation through their outstanding performance.

Also in attendance were Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Chairman, Senate Committee on Youths and Sports Development, Garba Maidoki and Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Kabiru Amadou.

D’Tigress recently claimed their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall after defeating Mali 78–64 in the final played at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan.

With this historic win, Nigeria secured qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball.

Although Senegal remains the most decorated team with 11 titles, D’Tigress’ back-to-back triumphs have firmly established them as a new powerhouse on the continent.
