Nigeria, Algeria strengthen ties as new embassy construction begins

    Published on

Nigeria and Algeria have pledged to deepen bilateral ties following a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, in Algiers.

Both ministers discussed shared strategic interests and agreed to expand cooperation in political, economic, and multilateral areas.

A statement released Sunday from Tuggar’s Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Alkasim Abdulkadir, said the talks focused on reviving the Nigeria-Algeria Binational Commission, improving regional coordination, and advancing African priorities on the global stage.

During the visit, Tuggar also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a new chancery building for Nigeria’s embassy in Algiers. The event, held in Dely Ibrahim, the city’s diplomatic enclave, was attended by senior officials, embassy staff, and members of the Nigerian community.

Speaking at the ceremony, Tuggar said the project reflects the government’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s diplomatic infrastructure.

The chancery is being designed with eco-friendly architecture, improved security systems, and upgraded facilities to enhance consular services and create better working conditions for foreign service personnel.

Construction will begin immediately and is expected to be completed within 18 months. The project is part of the ministry’s wider reform agenda to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence abroad and promote international cooperation.
