President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.

Mr. Adeniyi, whose tenure was due to expire on August 31, 2025, will now remain in office for an additional year to consolidate key reform programmes and ongoing strategic initiatives of the Tinubu administration.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

According to the statement, the tenure extension is aimed at ensuring the successful completion of crucial national projects, including the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

President Tinubu praised Mr. Adeniyi’s leadership, and commended his dedication to public service. He expressed confidence that the extension would further enhance the capacity of the Nigeria Customs Service in fulfilling its core responsibilities of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.

Mr. Adeniyi, a career customs officer and respected reform advocate, was appointed Comptroller-General in 2023. His tenure has been marked by notable efforts to digitalise operations, improve transparency, and strengthen inter-agency cooperation.

The extension comes at a time when the Customs Service is undergoing a major transformation aimed at aligning with global trade standards and boosting economic efficiency.
