One of the strongest earthquakes in recent history struck off Russia’s remote Far East in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves across the Pacific and prompting evacuations from Japan to Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast.
The 8.8 magnitude quake hit near the Kamchatka peninsula at 11:24 a.m. local time, sending residents fleeing inland as ports flooded and buildings shook. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was offshore, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of roughly 21 kilometers (13 miles).
Authorities initially warned millions in coastal areas to move to higher ground with Japan and Hawaii issued evacuation orders as tsunami waves began arriving.
Several people were injured in Russia while rushing out of buildings, and a hospital patient and kindergarten were also affected. All injuries were reported as stable.
In Japan, waves of up to 60 centimeters (2 feet) were recorded in Hokkaido’s Hamanaka town and Kuji port in Iwate, with smaller surges reported as far as Tokyo Bay. Dozens of coastal residents moved to evacuation centers and hilltops, with memories of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami still fresh.
Nearly two million individuals have been given evacuation advisories in over 220 municipalities along Japan’s Pacific coast, according to the country’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
Honolulu’s streets were jammed as Hawaiians rushed inland. By early Wednesday, the state’s warning was downgraded to an advisory, though emergency officials warned of strong currents and flooding in harbors and beaches.
Tsunami advisories also stretched along the U.S. West Coast and into Canada’s British Columbia, with the National Weather Service warning of “seriously dangerous currents” in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Chile upgraded its alert to the highest level and began evacuations along most of its Pacific coastline.
Despite the scale of the quake, no major damage has been reported. Japan’s nuclear regulator said no abnormalities were found at plants along the Pacific coast, including the Fukushima Daiichi site, where thousands of workers briefly evacuated to higher ground.
Following the disaster, the UK foreign office revised its travel guidance for 15 countries including Russian, USA, Chile, New Zealand, Japan, Costa Rica, Solomon Islands, Ecuador, Kiribati, French Polynesia, Taiwan, Tonga, Peru and Samoa.
The earthquake is among the most powerful recorded since the 9.0 magnitude event off northeastern Japan in 2011, which unleashed a devastating tsunami and nuclear disaster. Authorities warned the risk of unpredictable waves and strong currents could last for hours or even days.
