    Bauchi electoral commission chairman dies

    The chairman of Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), Ahmed Hardawa, is dead.

    Hardawa was said to have died after a brief illness in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

    He had just completed his last assignment which was the supervision of the May 24, 2025, by-election for the offices of Chairman and Deputy Chairman in Shira local government area of Bauchi.

    Confirming Hardawa’s passing, the Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed described his death as tragic.

    Mohammed in a condolence message signed by his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado said the late chairman was a distinguished statesman, an accomplished public servant, and a patriotic Nigerian.

    He condoled with his family, the people of Bauchi state and the commission over the chairman’s passing.

    The governor said, “In his role as Chairman of BASIEC, Alhaji Hardawa played a critical role in deepening democratic governance at the grassroots through the promotion of transparent and credible electoral processes.

    “His commitment to the rule of law, and institutional development earned him the respect of colleagues, political actors, and the general public.”
