Renewed violent attacks by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen reportedly occurred at Agan community in Benue State where one person was killed while no fewer than 50 youths were arrested for alleged retaliation.

It was learnt the armed to the teeth Fulani herdsmen stormed the community at about 5:30pm yesterday at Aston in Agan Ward in Makurdi, on sighting Mbakpenev Ukpehe, who was on his farm spreading herbicide behind his house, the suspected herdsmen brutally murdered him.

An eyewitness recounted the Fulani herders spotted the victim earlier when they were grazing on people’s farmlands during broad daylight.

Inhabitants in the neighbourhood disclosed that no Fulani herder was arrested during the attack, but 50 youths were arrested in connection with the recent episode at Agan.

Some of the inhabitants, who spoke on condition of anonymity, queried why people were being arrested indiscriminately in the area.

They lamented the selective justice going on in the country, and expressed dismay that the youths were being whisked away without apparent reason.

It could be recalled that a fortnight ago, some travellers were said to have been brutally murdered at the same spot.

When contacted, the Benue Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, said that her attention was yet to be drawn to the incident.
