The race to the top flight of Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) is about to hit fever pitch as the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs roar to life this Saturday, July 5, at the iconic Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

From July 5 to 12, eight clubs, some historic, others hungry and new, will lock horns for four golden tickets to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2025/26 season. The stakes are glory, promotion, and the right to be crowned champions of the 2024/25 NNL campaign.

Representing the Southern Conference are Warri Wolves, Osun United, Crown FC, and Kun Khalifa FC of Owerri. From the Northern zone, Wikki Tourists, Yobe Desert Stars, Doma United of Gombe, and Barau FC of Kano have made it through the rigorous campaign.

These teams, an electric mix of traditional powerhouses and ambitious newcomers, will square off in a week-long football carnival that promises grit, flair, and heartbreak in equal measure.

After Enugu’s Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium hosted last year’s edition won by Ikenne-based Beyond Limits, the torch now passes to Asaba, and Delta State is not taking the moment lightly.

“We are happy to announce that the sports-loving Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the hosting of the NNL Super 8 in Asaba. We’re grateful for this kind gesture which further cements Delta’s position as a leading sporting state in the country,” the NNL said in a statement.

Chairman of the NNL, George Aluo, also promised fans a feast of top-quality football, assuring that the host state is leaving no stone unturned in delivering a flawless tournament. From accommodation to matchday logistics, Asaba is ready to roll out the red carpet.

While promotion to the NPFL is the ultimate prize for the top four teams, there’s more on the line. Bragging rights and the honour of being crowned NNL champions will also be up for grabs, giving the tournament an extra layer of intrigue.

For the players, it’s a chance to put themselves on the radar of scouts, agents, and top-tier clubs. For the fans, it’s a spectacle of ambition, resilience, and the raw beauty of grassroots football.

As the countdown begins, Nigerian football lovers turn their eyes to Asaba. In a league where nothing is guaranteed and everything must be earned, only the strong, the strategic, and the spirited will rise from the Super 8 battlefield into NPFL glory.
