The Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship primary election, securing 51 votes to defeat nine other contestants.

His win cements his position as the party’s flag bearer for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils election.

Announcing the results at the end of the primary held on Wednesday, Chairman of the AMAC Electoral Committee, Dr. Habib Ibrahim, urged all aspirants to accept the outcome in good faith and rally behind the winner for the unity and progress of the party.

Ahead of the vote, several prominent aspirants reportedly stepped down in favour of Maikalangu, signaling the trust and confidence reposed in his leadership by key stakeholders and party loyalists.

Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs and APC FCT leader, Hon. Zephaniah Jisalo, congratulated Maikalangu on his victory, calling on all aspirants and members to support the party’s chosen candidate.

In his acceptance speech, Maikalangu thanked the party delegates for their overwhelming support and votes. He also extended an olive branch to his fellow aspirants, urging them to set aside their differences and work with him for the collective good of the APC and the people of AMAC.

“As the current Chairman of AMAC, we have executed numerous development projects across infrastructure, healthcare, and education,” Maikalangu said. “I believe our achievements and dedication to the well-being of our people contributed to this victory.”

Maikalangu’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC has been widely viewed as a strategic move to align AMAC more closely with the federal government, potentially unlocking greater development opportunities.

With this primary win, Maikalangu is positioned to extend his leadership of AMAC, building on his current tenure’s progress. His candidacy is also expected to further strengthen the APC’s political influence within the FCT.

Observers say the coming election will be a litmus test of Maikalangu’s popularity and performance, with the APC counting on him to retain the council and deliver tangible dividends of democracy to the grassroots.
