JUST IN: EFCC Invites Tompolo For Questioning

    Published on

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially invited former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for questioning over alleged naira abuse and financial misconduct.

According to reporters, EFCC sources confirmed that a formal invitation was delivered to Tompolo earlier this week. The agency emphasized that the move is procedural and not an arrest, stating, “We expect his cooperation.”

The EFCC’s action comes in response to a viral video showing Tompolo at a birthday celebration, where bundles of ₦1,000 notes were sprayed on him while he danced an act considered a violation under Section 21(3) of the CBN Act (2007), which bans mutilating or spraying naira notes at events. Violators face fines, imprisonment, or both.

The footage, believed to be from an April event, sparked widespread public outrage and accusations of double standards, as celebrities like Bobrisky, E-Money, Iyabo Ojo, and comedian AY have faced EFCC scrutiny for similar offenses, while Tompolo initially appeared to be overlooked.

Amid mounting backlash, the EFCC issued a statement on Monday reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law.

“Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer.”

While details of the financial misconduct allegations remain undisclosed, the agency’s move is seen as a signal that even individuals with significant political and economic influence will be held accountable.

Tompolo, once a prominent militant leader in the Niger Delta, has since transitioned into a more formal role. He currently holds a federal contract for securing oil pipelines, making him a powerful figure in both security and economic circles.

His close ties to federal structures and influence in the oil-rich region have intensified calls for greater transparency and accountability, especially when it comes to public funds and conduct.

The EFCC’s invitation may mark a turning point in how the agency handles high-profile figures tied to the government.
