I was never going to step down as Senate President – Akpabio declares

    Published on

Senate President of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio, has firmly denied ever considering resignation from his role as the head of the National Assembly.

Akpabio made this assertion during Thursday’s Senate plenary session, responding to a statement by Senate Majority Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, who expressed his confidence in Akpabio’s leadership.

Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central since 2019, remarked that critics who anticipated Akpabio’s removal over sexual harassment allegations would now be disappointed. He thanked fellow senators for their unity and emphasized that lawmakers would always demand credible evidence before taking action against any of their members.

He said, “I believe those expecting the Senate to have asked you to resign by now can clearly see that we are committed to our duties. Regardless of the nature of accusations against any of us, we will insist on evidence and act in the public’s best interest. Thank you, sir, and thanks to all our colleagues.”

Responding, Akpabio said, “You mentioned people expecting me to step down—who said I was planning to? Based on false allegations? Never.

“In America, history shows that many Black individuals were imprisoned for years over baseless accusations simply because of their skin color. I won’t be a victim of such injustice.

“People expect resignation over false claims, and when proven wrong, they regret it and say, ‘We were unfair to Akpabio.’ So if anyone is expecting that, they should abandon the idea.”

This development follows a recent incident involving a suspended female senator who allegedly violated Senate rules. She posted a sarcastic apology to Akpabio on Facebook, claiming she was sorry for “the crime of maintaining dignity and self-respect.”

Akpabio has since approached a Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking an order to compel the suspended senator from Kogi to take down the satirical post.
