Spain signs state of emergency in spite of nationwide power outage

    Published on

A national power outage that affected the majority of the Iberian Peninsula prompted the Spanish Interior Ministry to proclaim a state of emergency on Monday.

The government said in a statement that the regions that requested emergency status will be granted it.

According to reports, Madrid, Andalusia, and Extremadura have so far requested that the national government take over responsibility for maintaining public order and other duties.

Parts of Spain and Portugal came to a complete halt Monday due to a large power outage that caused planes to be grounded, public transportation to stop, panic buying to occur, and left the two nations rushing to restore electricity to millions of homes and businesses.

Some stores reportedly closed, and some hospitals reportedly halted regular operations.

“As we have done in previous emergencies, I invite the public to educate themselves through official means as we do not yet have definitive information on the causes of this (power) outage.

As of right now, there is no indication that there are any civil protection issues. In a nationwide speech, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reiterated that there are no insecurity issues.
