US-China Trade War: Seeking Common Ground

    Published on

The United States and China have restarted discussions aimed at resolving their ongoing trade dispute.

According to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized what he described as unfair treatment of the U.S. by its trade partners, especially China. In retaliation, Trump imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese imports. China’s President Xi Jinping responded by placing a 125% tariff on American goods.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday from the North Lawn of the White House, President Trump said negotiations with China are “active” and expressed confidence in reaching a fair agreement.

“We’re going to secure a fair deal with China,” Trump said. “Everything is moving. Everyone wants to be part of what we’re building. They know the status quo won’t continue, but they’ll still do well, and we’ll have a country people can be proud of.”

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that any agreement must be rooted in mutual respect and equality. Speaking at a press conference, he criticized the U.S. for initiating the conflict but affirmed China’s willingness to negotiate.

“This trade war was started by the U.S. While China does not seek conflict, we are not afraid of it. We are prepared to talk if the U.S. is ready,” Jiakun said.

He further cautioned the U.S. against using coercive tactics.

“If the U.S. genuinely wants a negotiated resolution, it must stop its threats and pressure tactics. Dialogue must be built on mutual respect, equality, and shared benefit,” he concluded.
