The Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government has reiterated its support for the right of citizens, especially young people, to protest, acknowledging the importance of free expression and addressing grievances.

However, the government has issued a strong warning against any form of destruction of national infrastructure during protests, emphasizing the need for peaceful demonstrations.

This was said on Monday in Abuja by Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development.

Although the administration is aware of the concerns expressed by demonstrators, Olawande agreed that it is imperative that protests stay nonviolent and do not lead to violence or the destruction of property.

Olawande stated that he would have participated in the protests himself if he had had the time, even as he defended the right to demonstrate.

“Everyone has the right to protest,” he declared. In fact, I would participate in the demonstration myself if I had the time. Everyone is able to express themselves freely. The young people who are demonstrating have good reasons; they feel compelled to speak out because they observe certain problems. They are taking to the streets because of this.

“While exercising this right, let it not escalate into something else,” he emphasized. We will not permit anyone to demolish the advancements in infrastructure that underpin our nation’s success and economy.

“Yes, you have the right to speak, to come out and make your voice heard—even to stand by the roadside—but do not block the roads,” Olawande added, underscoring the importance of nonviolent protests. People will listen to you if you can voice your worries in a calm manner. I’ll be there to talk to them as well if I have the chance.

“Protesting is a normal part of any society, and we are here to listen,” he declared in closing. While no government is advocating against protesting, there must be restrictions and a sense of responsibility.”
