Yoon’s impeachment will be decided by South Korean Constitutional Court

The Constitutional Court of South Korea is scheduled to render a decision on Friday regarding the permanent removal of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol from office.

The court said in a statement on Tuesday that it will deliver its decision on Yoon, who lawmakers impeached after briefly imposing martial law late last year, at 11 a.m. (02:00 GMT), with live broadcasting.

To remove Yoon from office, his impeachment must be upheld by at least six of the eight justices.

A presidential election will take held within 60 days if the court upholds Yoon’s impeachment.

Yoon, who has been suspended since the middle of December, will be reinstated right away if not.

Yoon stated that he imposed martial law for a brief period of time in order to raise concerns about the opposition Democratic Party’s obstructionism and pro-North Korean posture.

Within six hours of the National Assembly’s unanimous decision to revoke the martial law proclamation, Yoon, who was elected in 2022, lifted it.
