Court adjourns Obasa’s suit challenging removal as Speaker to March 17

    Published on

The hearing of a lawsuit brought by Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, who was reinstated, has been postponed until March 17, 2025 by Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.

Obasa is contesting his removal from office, which was carried out on January 13, 2025, due to accusations of malfeasance, abuse of power, and fraud by 35 MPs.

Members of the Lagos Assembly as well as former Speaker Mojisola Meranda are among the suit’s respondents.

Femi Falana (SAN), the House of Assembly’s attorney, requested an adjournment during Monday’s hearings, citing recently submitted affidavits from Obasa’s legal team.

Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), Meranda’s attorney, also asked for more time to address the grave fraud claims made in the recent documents.

According to Justice Pinheiro, on March 17, all outstanding applications—including those pertaining to jurisdiction and injunctions—will be heard collectively.

Before the next hearing, she instructed all parties to exchange and file their legal processes.

Lagos APC officials’ involvement resulted in Obasa’s reinstatement; yet, his unwillingness to drop the lawsuit suggests that tensions within the Assembly are still present.
