The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has condemned the recent attack on the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) by personnel of the Nigerian Air Force, which took place on Thursday. The violent incident led to multiple injuries and extensive damage to vital equipment and facilities.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications, Hon. Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu expressed deep concern over the attack, emphasizing that it not only threatens critical power infrastructure but also undermines the progress and well-being of millions of Nigerians. “The Ikeja Electric facilities are essential for the distribution of electricity to homes, hospitals, schools, and industries, serving millions across the country,” the Minister said.
Adelabu underscored the significance of the power sector, calling it the backbone of the nation’s economy. “Attacking this infrastructure is an attack on our collective goals for a stable and uninterrupted power supply,” he said, lamenting that such violence sets back efforts to improve the country’s energy sector, which is crucial for national development.
The Minister called for peaceful, democratic solutions to conflicts, stating, “No grievance, however valid, justifies the destruction of public infrastructure.” He urged all parties to resolve disputes through lawful channels, such as the judiciary, legislature, and regulatory bodies.
Adelabu also appealed to the Nigerian Air Force to uphold professionalism, ensuring that civilian welfare and public infrastructure are safeguarded in their operations. “The military’s role in maintaining peace and security is vital, but all actions must adhere to democratic principles and the rule of law,” he added.
The Minister concluded by commending the staff and management of Ikeja Electric for their resilience in the face of the attack and assured them that the Federal Ministry of Power would support efforts to restore normalcy. He also called on all Nigerians to embrace peace and unity, urging them to reject violence and destruction while fostering dialogue, mutual respect, and democratic values. “Together, we can build a nation where conflicts are resolved through appropriate means, ensuring the aspirations of all citizens are fulfilled,” Adelabu said.
