Meranda Seeks GAC Blessings as Lagos’ First Female Speaker After Obasa Impeachment

    Published on

Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the newly elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) on Tuesday. The GAC, the top decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, received Meranda at the Lagos House in Marina.

Accompanied by fellow Assembly members, Meranda provided updates on the recent legislative changes, including the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. She also sought the council’s blessings as she begins her historic tenure.

“We came to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings, which we have gotten,” Meranda stated after the meeting.

Meranda’s election marks a milestone as she becomes the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Her ascension follows the impeachment of Obasa, who was removed by more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement.

Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, was first elected to the House in 2007 and served as Speaker for nearly a decade, starting in June 2015. His removal brings an end to his long-standing leadership.

Meranda, who previously served as Obasa’s deputy, now leads the Assembly during a transformative period in Lagos State politics
