South Korean president not allowed to leave country

    Published on

Less than a week after briefly enforcing martial emergency and plunging the nation into pandemonium, South Korea’s Ministry of Justice announced Monday that President Yoon Suk Yeol has been prohibited from leaving the country.

On the evening of December 3, Yoonhad dispatched special forces and helicopters to parliament, but MPs compelled him to revoke the order when they rejected his edict.

Even as large protesters braved frigid temperatures to demand his removal, it was learned that he narrowly avoided an impeachment motion in parliament on Saturday.

Investigations, including one into suspected mutiny, have been focusing on Yoon and his close associates even though he is still in office.

Yoon became the first current South Korean president to be prohibited from leaving the nation, the Ministry of Justice revealed on Monday.

Former Interior Minister Lee Sang-min and former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is presently in jail, are both prohibited from traveling due to their involvement in last week’s events.
