The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), mni, has urged Nigerian journalists to adopt Developmental Journalism as a key tool for fostering national unity and sustainable growth.

Addressing delegates at the 8th Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Triennial National Delegates Congress in Owerri, Argungu condemned what he described as “gorilla journalism” and called for a shift toward a more positive, constructive approach. He emphasized the importance of journalists collaborating with both the government and the public in order to build a stronger, more unified Nigeria.

In a goodwill message read on his behalf by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of the PSC’s Press and Public Relations Unit, DIG Argungu highlighted the crucial role of journalists as the “watchdogs of society” and their responsibility in ensuring accountability within Nigeria’s democratic framework. He urged the media to focus on promoting development rather than solely exposing negative aspects of the country.

“Journalism must evolve beyond just highlighting problems,” Argungu stated. “It should become a driving force for building a prosperous, egalitarian nation.” He encouraged journalists to remain impartial, uphold transparency, and resist any practices that might undermine their professional integrity.

Argungu also acknowledged the Nigerian government’s commitment to press freedom, emphasizing that journalists should take advantage of this liberty while adhering to the ethical standards that govern the profession.

The PSC Chairman congratulated the outgoing NUJ President, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, for his leadership, which has brought visibility and direction to the Union. He expressed confidence that the incoming leadership would build on this success and further enhance the role of the NUJ in national development.

The NUJ Congress, held in Owerri, brought together delegates from across Nigeria. The event featured discussions aimed at enhancing journalism’s role in nation-building and its contribution to the country’s progress.
