The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has officially sealed the Orchid Shopping Centre in Eti-Osa due to public health concerns. This action was announced by the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Friday.

The shopping centre was shut down for allegedly discharging wastewater onto public roads and drains, creating significant environmental hazards. The statement released by the Wastewater Management Office emphasized the seriousness of the violations: “The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) today, Friday, September 27, 2024, sealed off Orchid Shopping Centre’s premises located along Orchid Road, Eti-Osa, for discharging wastewater onto the road and public drains, thereby creating environmental nuisance and endangering public health.”

Additionally, the agency warned of potential heavy sanctions against other businesses engaging in similar harmful practices. It advised individuals and organizations to stop discharging untreated wastewater and sewage into the environment or face penalties.

The statement reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to environmental protection, stating, “The State has zero tolerance for environmental pollution and degradation.” The authorities are determined to uphold the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, to ensure public safety and health.
