Urgent Calls for Global Action as Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdullah M. Abu Shawesh, has expressed deep appreciation for Nigeria’s backing during a recent UN vote, highlighting the critical need for the international community to address what he termed Israel’s “barbaric and tyrannical colonial interests.”

In a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, Ambassador Shawesh provided an alarming update on the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the death toll has tragically exceeded 41,272, with over 95,551 injuries reported since the onset of the conflict nearly a year ago. As conditions deteriorate, global condemnation of Israel’s military actions and their catastrophic effects on civilians is escalating.

The Ambassador noted that the United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution calling for an arms embargo on Israel and demanding an end to its occupation of Palestinian territories within the next year. This resolution garnered substantial support, with 124 out of 193 member states, including Nigeria, voting in favor. This overwhelming consensus underscores a growing international movement advocating for Palestinian self-determination and an end to what many view as Israel’s extended occupation.

He also cited a report from the World Health Organization, which underscores the dire humanitarian situation, indicating that approximately 25% of those injured in Gaza will likely need long-term rehabilitation, particularly due to severe limb injuries. The report estimates that between 3,105 and 4,050 amputations have occurred as a direct result of the ongoing violence.

Additionally, Ambassador Shawesh raised concerns over disturbing allegations from the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, claiming that Israel is enlisting African asylum seekers for military operations in Gaza, promising them permanent residency in exchange for their participation. This revelation has sparked further outrage and accusations of human rights violations against the Israeli government.

As the conflict approaches its 349th day, the demands for justice and accountability are becoming increasingly pressing. Numerous UN experts caution that the continued violence and the failure of states to fulfill their obligations are eroding the foundations of international law.

The situation remains critical, with humanitarian organizations urgently calling for immediate action to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and restore peace in the region.
