Since President Bola Tinubu’s administration began, Nigeria has faced a sharp rise in fuel prices, climbing from N195 to over N1,000 per litre in just 16 months. The removal of the fuel subsidy in May 2023 triggered this surge, resulting in long queues at filling stations and growing frustration across the country. While waiting for relief from government policies, there are practical steps to save on fuel:

    1. Avoid Idling
Turn off your engine when stopped for more than a minute. Idling burns fuel without purpose, so switch off when possible.

    2. Check Tire Pressure Regularly
Underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by up to 4%. Checking your tire pressure monthly ensures efficient fuel use.

    3. Maintain a Steady Speed
Frequent acceleration and braking waste fuel. Driving at a consistent speed, especially with cruise control on highways, can improve fuel efficiency.

    4. Tighten Your Fuel Cap
A loose fuel cap can cause fuel to evaporate. Ensure it’s securely closed to prevent waste.

    5. Consider a Fuel-Efficient Vehicle
If possible, switch to a more fuel-efficient vehicle to cut long-term costs and reduce environmental impact.

    6. Use Public Transport
Taking buses or trains can significantly reduce fuel expenses and relieve the stress of driving in traffic.

    7. Work From Home When Possible
If your job allows, working remotely eliminates the need for commuting, saving fuel and reducing stress.

Implementing these simple adjustments can help manage fuel consumption and ease the financial burden during Nigeria’s fuel crisis.
