President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, to offer his condolences and support following a severe flood that has devastated the region. His visit aims to assess the damage and provide assistance to the affected residents and the state government.

Upon his arrival at Maiduguri International Airport, President Tinubu was welcomed by Governor Babagana Zulum and other officials. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that the flood resulted from the Alau Dam overflow, triggered by heavy rainfall, marking the worst flooding in Maiduguri in 30 years.

The disaster, which affected over 23,000 households, occurred when the Alau Dam ruptured on the Ngadda River, approximately 20km south of Maiduguri. This caused rapid water level rise, submerging 70% of Maiduguri and damaging critical infrastructure, including the Shehu of Borno’s palace, government buildings, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, houses, schools, commercial centers, and places of worship.

The flood also devastated Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo, resulting in the loss of 80% of its animals. President Tinubu expressed deep concern and directed relevant agencies to expedite rescue efforts, evacuate residents, and address the humanitarian needs of those affected. Prompt action is underway to support the flood victims and restore normalcy to the region.
