Former Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has clarified that reports suggesting Victor Osimhen’s wage demands were the reason for the failed transfer are inaccurate.

Chelsea made a last-minute attempt to sign the Super Eagles forward during the final hours of the summer transfer window, but the deal could not be finalized. Napoli reportedly accepted an €80 million ($88.5 million) offer from Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli on deadline day, but Osimhen was hesitant about leaving European football.

Mikel, who was involved in the negotiations, revealed that the transfer was “hours away” from completion and noted that Osimhen was “disappointed” when the move did not materialize.

“I know what Victor wanted, I know what the club offered him, and I know where we got to; we finally reached a compromise,” Mikel said on The Obi One Podcast. “There were just a few minor issues—paperwork, medicals, and other details—that we couldn’t resolve in time.”

He praised both Chelsea and Osimhen for their efforts, stating, “Both sides played their part in trying to get the deal done, and I commend Chelsea for their ambition. Victor was also very keen on joining the club.”

Mikel added that he spoke with Osimhen after the transfer window closed and encouraged him to stay positive. “Victor is a strong character, much like Didier Drogba and Diego Costa. He has the edge and the intensity that we need at the club.”

Addressing rumors of a fallout between Osimhen and Chelsea over the failed transfer, Mikel emphasized, “There are definitely no issues. If we revisit this in January or next summer, we’ll know where we left off, and only a few details need to be finalized.”

He expressed his commitment to bringing Osimhen to Chelsea, saying, “Victor is one of the best strikers in the world right now and Africa’s best player. I’m determined to make sure he joins the club because I know the impact he can have.”

Osimhen has since secured a season-long loan move to Galatasaray.
