Fire Destroys Lagos Govt Staff Quarters, Millions in Damages

    Published on

A fire broke out early Friday morning, severely damaging a portion of the two-storey Lagos State Government Staff Quarters on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road, Ogba.

The blaze, which started around 2:20 a.m., affected a two-bedroom unit in Flat 5 of Block 21, a building with 16 two-bedroom flats spread across three stories.

Initial investigations by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) identified an electrical surge in the children’s room as the source of the fire. The blaze destroyed the children’s bedroom and caused significant damage to property estimated in the millions of naira.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, reported that the prompt response by the agency’s LRT, the Nigerian Police Force, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service effectively contained and extinguished the fire. Thankfully, there were no casualties or injuries.

Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu also noted that the incident served as an opportunity to educate victims and other residents on the safe use of electrical appliances. By 5 a.m., emergency personnel were still working to fully control the situation.
