Social media users are expressing frustration over the recent hike in Nigerian passport fees. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced on Wednesday that starting September 1, 2024, the cost for a 32-page passport will rise to N50,000 from the previous N35,000, while the 64-page passport will now cost N100,000, up from N70,000.

Many are decrying the increase as a further burden in an already challenging economic environment. Users on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram have voiced concerns about the impact of the fee hike, which they see as exacerbating financial strain for ordinary Nigerians.

Some critics have pointed to issues of corruption, with allegations that NIS officials often demand unofficial payments. Others have highlighted the disparity between the quick implementation of the fee increase and the slow progress on wage increases for workers.

X user #Lexyzdoo remarked, “Online 50k, offline 100k for 32 pages,” while Taiwo Olaoye on Facebook questioned the need for additional bribes despite the higher fees. Another user, #souqueasnaf, expressed skepticism about the efficiency of the process, saying, “If it’s 50k and 100k for 32 and 64 pages respectively, and we will get it done seamlessly without paying a bribe or extra cost, then it’s ok.”

Criticism also extended to the short notice given for the fee increase. User #Enwagboso suggested delaying the effective date to January 1, 2025, citing a lack of empathy from the government.

The increased fees come as Nigeria’s passport was recently ranked 92nd out of 199 on the Henley Passport Index, underscoring ongoing issues related to international travel and citizenship status.

The fee hike has intensified debates on social media about the government’s approach to public service and the cost of living in Nigeria.
