Senator Abbo Criticizes Senatorial Salaries, Compares with Governors’ Earnings

Former Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo has expressed dissatisfaction with the current salary and allowances for Nigerian senators, revealing that he earned N14.4 million monthly during his tenure, while current senators receive N29 million. He described the N29 million as insufficient given the responsibilities senators bear, arguing that governors’ earnings are significantly higher, ranging from N700 million to N1 billion per month.

In an interview with Arise TV, Abbo elaborated on the disparity between senatorial and gubernatorial compensation. He acknowledged that the N29 million figure might appear substantial but emphasized that it falls short in practice.

Abbo noted that while serving in the Senate, his total monthly compensation was approximately N14.4 million, which included both salary and allowances. He contrasted this with the income of governors, stating that their earnings are far greater, despite the substantial demands placed on senators.

“I am saying this as a very honest man,” Abbo remarked. “N29 million looks big on paper, but when you consider the demands and challenges faced by senators, it is quite meager.”

Abbo further explained that his personal finances were strained by his senatorial duties, as he had to subsidize his office’s expenses out of pocket. He cited the constant need to address requests for assistance from constituents, including funding scholarships and providing support, which added to the financial burden.

Despite his criticism, Abbo clarified that he is not defending the National Assembly but rather presenting his perspective based on his experiences. He urged a reconsideration of the compensation structure to better reflect the responsibilities of senators in comparison to state governors.
