Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu against arresting Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate from the 2023 election, in connection with the planned nationwide protests. Lawal criticized Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, for alleging that Obi and the Obidient Movement are behind the protest.

In a recent statement, Lawal labeled Onanuga a “sycophant” who is misleading the president and advised Tinubu to remove him from his position. He argued that Onanuga’s comments inflame tensions rather than promote constructive dialogue. Lawal expressed concern that using force against protesters could exacerbate the situation and potentially lead to chaos.

Lawal further accused Onanuga of displaying a lack of respect and understanding, suggesting that his behavior is unbefitting of a presidential spokesman. He defended Obi, stating that the former LP presidential candidate is not involved in the organization of the protest and criticized the notion that Obi would be linked to such activities.

The former SGF emphasized that arresting Obi could have severe repercussions for the federal government and cautioned against taking actions that could destabilize the country. He also noted that Obi’s demeanor and approach are not aligned with the inflammatory rhetoric attributed to Onanuga.

Overall, Lawal’s comments reflect ongoing political tensions and the broader debate about handling dissent and protests in Nigeria.
